Geography - Our Vision at Thriplow
From the moment we are born it is our instinct to begin to explore the world around us.
At Thriplow we feel it is important to nurture and encourage a natural curiosity about our world and to give the children the skills to interpret what they see. Across the school we look at countries and continents around the world and learn about the similarities and differences between Britain and the wider world.
Starting in Ants class, Geography comes under the heading of ‘Understanding the World’. In KS1 we find out about the village of Thriplow and the City of London before extending out further in KS2 to find out about the whole of the United Kingdom and the Continent we live in. Further study of the countries and continents of our wonderful planet take place while studying our topics. This also involves study in History, RE and other subjects across the curriculum.
We learn to draw and interpret maps and to develop a variety of other skills through our topic work, including those of enquiry, problem solving and interpreting our work, calling on skills learned in Maths and English and applying them in new ways.
At Thriplow we also aim to instill in our children a sense of environmental responsibility and encourage them to understand environmental issues at a local and global level. We have an Eco-Squad made up of children from across the school tasked with looking at ways that we, as individuals and as a school community, can limit our carbon footprint and look after our world. We want to motivate and inspire our children to find out about their world, both physical and human, so that they can take an active part in contributing to and protecting the world as they grow up.
